Bugzilla – Bug 12510
Need Home menu icon for advance settings and other misc.
Last modified: 2009-10-05 14:25:46 UTC
Couple options: 1. Create a generic "Shortcut" icon for the home menu when misc. items from advanced settings are included on the Home menu. This proposal will scale as the setting options will no doubt expand and contract. 2. Reuse the advance settings icon (currently being designed) for any item that is added to Home menu.
This icon would be used on Baby, Jive, and Fab4...
a suggestion-- any settings item, including anything in advanced, that does not have an icon designated for it gets the generic "wrench" settings icon.
Noah, what's your opinion on Ben's suggestion? FYI, it's being retargeted for CXR.
I think it is consistent with the way we are treating multiple search icons. To be clear, these default icons would only be used if a user added them to the home menu.
We now have both a "Shortcut" icon as well as a method for advanced settings to use the generic "Settings" icon when added to the home menu. In all cases, a supporting text string will be either to the right of the icon or directly below. Matt-Please close if you give this approach the green light.
cc:ing Tom, this is the bug for the "fallbackIconStyle" that we talked about. The idea is that home menu items would have a style (which is often dynamically derived from its item id value) as well as a fallbackStyle, which would take effect if the style was not defined in the skin. This would avoid a situation where an item was promoted from advanced to home and it has no icon. Not going to happen for CAT, but I think it's major not minor
Tom, assigning this one your way. We need some C support for the fallback style and I think we'll be able to put this bug to rest...

Richard suggested a possible easy fix: use the parent icon, when adding the item to the home menu.
Using a parent icon when sub menus do not contain developed icons makes a lot of sense. We will need to look at this on a case by case basis, no? Part of the strength of a "shortcut" icon is that it is by definition generic. If we can be smarter about the icon defaults then I am all for it...

What is the proposed default for new features, new apps, etc.?
