Pushing of the volume knob should have an effect.  Possibilities are:

Pause
Mute
Tone control (push into treble control, send hit pushes into bass, third hit pops out)

There should probably be a setting to allow the user to pick one of these, I'd start with a default of pause and see what happens.

Extra credit:  push-hold the knob should bring up this setting menu!

Eh? why pause, there is a dedicated button for that already?

I agree with Richard, we have a dedicated pause button.  I personally would like to see the push of the volume button to be mute.

I vote for mute and not pause, too.

Consensus is that Mute is the default.  Go for it.
