Description Anoop Mehta 2009-06-04 13:05:13 UTC
Turning off SSID broadcasting on my router..The Baby Boom would not connect.

I tried this with both No Encryption and with WPA2.

This was with firmware r5974
Comment 1 Felix Mueller 2009-06-30 08:08:06 UTC
Hmm, not sure how this should actually work. The non-broadcast AP is in the list, but (obviously) w/o SSID:

# wpa_cli scan_r
Selected interface 'eth1'
bssid / frequency / signal level / flags / ssid
00:1e:2a:55:f4:32       2412    212     [WPA2-PSK-CCMP][WPS]    No Support
00:18:4d:85:e0:44       2462    209     [WPA2-PSK-CCMP-preauth] No Device
00:22:3f:13:cd:f8       2437    204     [WPA2-PSK-CCMP][WPS]    WGR614L
00:21:29:c7:7a:6a       2427    202     [WPA2-PSK-CCMP][WPS]    WRT54G2
00:21:91:33:f6:8f       2417    199     [WPA2-PSK-CCMP][WPS]    DIR-300
00:11:6b:2a:27:06       2447    200     [WPS]

and the wpa_supplicant.conf file looks ok:

# cat /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant
update_config=1

network={
        ssid="wbr-6001"
        key_mgmt=NONE
}

but wpa_supplicant does not connect.
Comment 2 Blackketter Dean 2009-06-30 08:44:17 UTC
IS there any error message or any other debug information from the
supplicant, Felix?
Comment 3 Chris Owens 2009-07-07 10:15:00 UTC
This bug has been identified as one that may not be required for MPQ since it now seems clear that MPQ and MP firmwares will be different. Please comment if you disagree with this assessment. Thanks!
Comment 4 Dan Evans 2009-07-07 10:39:19 UTC
My only requirement is that the firmware we ship with, out of box, will include the fix for this bug. How we get there is up to engineering.
Comment 5 James Richardson 2009-07-08 13:02:59 UTC
r6430 does NOT address this issue.

Deferring bug to MP.
Comment 6 Felix Mueller 2009-07-15 06:09:29 UTC
Fixed in r6577
Comment 7 Dan Evans 2009-07-31 14:52:58 UTC
Testing with r6865 I am seeing this again.

When trying to connect to a hidden SSID the connection attempt fails. The first time I tried it I got this error:

"DHCP Address Can't Be Found'

After selecting "Try again" I got a different error message:

"Can't Connect ... We were unable to connect using the above password"

I tried on 2 different routers: Apple TimeCapsule and Linksys WRT54G.
Comment 8 Felix Mueller 2009-08-01 02:47:47 UTC
Dan: I don't see this here - also retried with Apple Airport and r6865 and Baby connected just fine.

The error message you got indicates a DHCP issue. Please make sure a DHCP server is running, reachable and has IP addresses left to give out from its pool.

Could you please try / test if Baby can connect if the SSID is not hidden?

If that works, hide the SSID again, do a factory reset and try again and report back if it still fails.

But as I said, I don't think it's a hidden SSID issue you are seeing, but a DHCP problem.

Thanks

QA to re-verify with router test matrix
Comment 10 Dan Evans 2009-08-03 11:47:16 UTC
Felix-- You may be correct. See my tests below. I'm either seeing a problem with the Apple router or I'm seeing a very intermittent issue with hidden SSIDs on Apple routers. Bug 13167 leads me to wonder if Baby is producing the wrong error when it has trouble connecting- wired or wirelessly.

FWIW, when I looked at this last week, I remember specifically after one failed attempt I unhid the SSID and Baby connected successfully.

My tests today:

1. Factory Reset Baby A ... directed it to connect to my Apple Timecapsule with hidden SSID ... Error: "DHCP Address Can't Be Found"

2. Factory Reset Baby B ... directed it to connect to my Apple Timecapsule with hidden SSID ... Error: "Can't Connect; You entered: <correct key>; We were unable to connect using the above password."

--> I reset the Apple Timecapsule at this point

3. Factory Reset Baby A ... directed it to connect to my Apple Timecapsule with hidden SSID ... connected successfully.

4. Factory Reset Baby B ... directed it to connect to my Apple Timecapsule with hidden SSID ... connected successfully.

--> Pulled out a Linksys WRT54G2 V1

5. Factory Reset Baby A ... directed it to connect to the Linksys router with hidden SSID ... connected successfully.

6. Factory Reset Baby B ... directed it to connect to the Linksys router with hidden SSID ... connected successfully.

--> Trying Apple Timecapsule again.

7. Factory Reset Baby A ... directed it to connect to my Apple Timecapsule with hidden SSID ... connected successfully.

8. Factory Reset Baby B ... directed it to connect to my Apple Timecapsule with hidden SSID ... connected successfully.

bah... forget my comment, I was checking the wrong security model during setup
Comment 13 Felix Mueller 2009-08-04 13:22:35 UTC
From Dan's comment I understand it was an issue with Time Capsule and not with Babys wireless.
Comment 14 Mickey Gee 2009-08-18 11:44:58 UTC
Reducing priority. Should this be closed?
Comment 15 James Richardson 2009-08-18 11:50:52 UTC
Ross is testing this now with latest MP firmware, assigning to him so he can research it.

Ross: Please test with all the apple routers we have.
Comment 16 Ross Levine 2009-08-19 11:27:30 UTC
Not reproducible against airport extreme; Anoop please try reproducing this once again with current firmware.
Comment 17 Ross Levine 2009-08-21 13:58:27 UTC
Dan can you also please test again with your time capsule.
Comment 18 Dan Evans 2009-08-21 14:04:46 UTC
Sorry no, I can't.  It's in the office-- I'm not.  I'm back Aug. 31.
Comment 19 Anoop Mehta 2009-08-21 16:27:57 UTC
not reproduceable with a linksys wrt54g with firmware r7211.

Tried it about 10 time and was successfull everytime.
Comment 20 Dan Evans 2009-09-11 11:05:53 UTC
Tested on Apple Timecapsule. Connected fine multiple times.
