Bugzilla – Bug 12218
New Feature Request: "Follow Me" - The ability to easily transfer current music listening from one Boom to another
Last modified: 2019-01-25 10:04:05 UTC
This is a suggestion for a new feature "Follow Me" based around the Synchronization feature of the SqueezeBox system. Synchronization allows the user to synchronize one control point (e.g., a Boom) with another control point, to fulfill the user desire for a party mode, for example. Leveraging this feature, "Follow Me" encompasses the user desire to listen to music, a playlist or programme in one room (i.e., from one control point) and then move to another room. For example, having woken up in the morning and listening to a favourite playlist in random order in the bedroom, transfer that current selection to the kitchen where the user continues their morning routine. The key features would be: - given any music programme (e.g., playlist, internet radio) currently playing on one control point (e.g., Boom), allow a user to 'bring' that exact same programme (preserving current position, shuffle order, repeat mode etc.) to another control point, continuing on the new control point from the exact point where it left off on the old control point and then turn off the old control point (so this becomes Follow Me, rather than Synchronisation). (The user could be given the option to turn off the old control point, allowing for more sophistication). - optionally the Boom should also implement a "Transfer To" feature allowing the user to transfer the music programme to another control point, before they leave. - play state (e.g., play/pause) should be preserved, allowing the user to pause a programme, trasfer it, move to the new location and then continue without missing anything - the "Transfer To" and "Follow Me" commands should be available to be configured from the SqueezeCenter Settings > Player > Menus web page to allow them to be available from the top menu of the Boom software User Interface, allowing quick access by the user - in anticipation of this being a highly used feature.

Robert: I just noticed this request while searching for something else. Have you looked at the "Other Players" plugin? I think it does most if not all of what you are asking for here. http://thespicers.net/otherPlayers.html Not trying to discount your request. It would be great as core functionality, but I thought I'd mention the plugin in case you didn't know about it.

Hi Sue, Thanks very much for taking the time to highlight the "Other Players" plug-in, which does indeed allow control points to send and receive playlists between themselves; allowing some of the desired functionality to be achieved whilst waiting for a complete "Follow Me" feature. The "Follow Me" feature is intended to be a superset of "Other Players" in that it will also transfer and preserve simple control point state (such as shuffle and repeat) but also allow the transfer of and preservation of more subtle and sophisticated control point context, such as if the original control point was under the control of another plugin such as "Random Mix" which constantly adds and removes songs from the current playlist. Cheers, Robert
Available in 3rd party "Music Walk With Me" plugin, Material skin, or mobile apps.
