Description Wadzinski Tom 2009-05-28 03:55:47 UTC
Richard and I worked out the following idea to improve the Wake On Lan usage on our products.

1) SC will have a boolean user setting that indicates whether the machine is a capable of WOL.

2) If the setting is selected, SC will return in the serverstatus message a "WOL Mac address", the Mac Address of the SC. Alternately, it could send back two pieces of information, 1) the Mac Address, and 2) a flag that indicates that the server is WOL capable.

3) Clients will use this in the following way: For example, SqueezePlay will never clear from its Music Source list any server that has a WOL Mac address. Instead it will locally persist the list of WOL capable SCs and the Mac address so that any server the is asleep, not just the last used server, can easily be woken up. the server would be taken of the static list if ever the SC setting were changed back to "don't advertise".

Regarding 2: I think we had this (or a similar) idea before. Is it now possible to figure out the correct SC MAC address if:

- SC runs not as administrator / root
- on a dual homed server

I'm not sure I understand what issue we're trying to fix here. But leaving that flag to the user to set, this will IMHO cause a lot of confusion. Which user actually knows whether his computer is WOL capable or not? I don't...
