Description James Rome 2009-05-13 20:05:53 UTC
I have 3200 artists and over 39000 tracks. Scrolling through the Artist list to get to, say "T" or "W" is painful. Cant you make the scroll bidirectional? I.e., why can't I scroll up to get to the end of the alphabet, as well as scrolling down.

And a better scheme might be to jump letters using the << and >> keys.

I will not deny that scrolling long lists on the controller has room for improvement, but I should point out that scrolling is indeed bi-directional. At the top of the list, start scrolling up. It'll take about half a turn of the wheel before it will jump to the bottom of the list, and the same "resistance" when hitting the bottom of the list to go around to the top.

With no manual, it is hard to figure that out. I tried scrolling backwards, but it did not work for me. I guess I did not try hard enough. I think using the << and >> keys would be a great way of getting close to where you are going, especially if they accelerated.

I don't think that the fact the reporter uses a Mac has anything to do with it. I'm on a PC and the scrolling on the controller is diabolical (and may even be getting worse with later SC releases). Trying to stop precisely on a single item is bad enough on small lists but on large lists it can take 5 or 6 attempts to stop on the correct item. The implementation of acceleration and decceleration is just plain wrong. It is the awful scrolling on the controllers that has drivem my new choice of phone. I have an iPhone now and use Squeezemote and iPeng. If the scrolling and navigation function on the controller is ever looked at again then maybe the iPhone implementation could be adopted (even including the little A-Z listing on the right hand side for fast location)?

Yes. My Creative Muvo has an A-Z list on the right to scroll through, and it works a lot better. The problem with the scroll wheel (an awful feature imho) is that it accelerates, and always goes past where I want to stop.

The scroll wheel overshoot is very hard for family members to navigate long lists.
