Bugzilla – Bug 12040
Integrate MH's Troubleshooter applet into new Control Panels
Last modified: 2009-10-05 14:33:35 UTC
Michael's Troubleshooter applet did several things: * Test for the existence of firewalls and A/V software * Report on those firewalls and how they may affect SC * Test pings to SN via 3483 and 80 * Test for port conflicts on 9000 Am I missing something, Michael? I'd like these functions in our new Control Panels. Currently in the Diagnostics page on windows are tests for SC's ports (3483, 9000, 9090) and test pings to SN over 3483 & 9000. Still need the firewall tests and reports. Still need port conflict test and report.
Michael reports... Windows Control Panel: * Test for the existence of firewalls and A/V software - Implemented * Test pings to SN via 3483 and 80 - Implemented * Test for port conflicts on 9000 - Implemented * Report on those firewalls and how they may affect SC - Still Needed Mac Preference Pane: * "WontFix" ... firewall & port conflict issues are uncommon on Mac OS
> * Report on those firewalls and how they may affect SC - Still Needed Have you been using the troubleshooter to gather this information? Did it really help? Just wondering. > * "WontFix" ... firewall & port conflict issues are uncommon on Mac OS Dean mentioned this: http://www.macgeekery.com/tips/cli/properly_modifying_the_apple_firewall_from_the_command_line might be worth adding to the installation script
> Have you been using the troubleshooter to gather this information? Did it > really help? Just wondering. Yes, we have. It is a great tool to demonstrate to the customer what the problem really is, and then to help them address it. Having that text in our Diagnostics screen would be a big help. And just to be sure we're talking about the same thing, I'm referring to your text that says something like, "Norton Firewall process detected; Norton Anti-Virus process detected." >> * "WontFix" ... firewall & port conflict issues are uncommon on Mac OS > > Dean mentioned this: > http://www.macgeekery.com/tips/cli/properly_modifying_the_apple_firewall_from_the_command_line > > might be worth adding to the installation script Yes, I agree. The firewall issues we fix for our Mac customers now are because the built-in Mac firewall is not configured properly. (We almost never have any issues with the Windows firewall after you added the auto-config for Windows' built-in firewall.)
Just making sure Matt is cc'ed on all of these, per his email request.
I've looked at what's in the Windows version so far and it's great. The bottom area should be able to support the messaging used when firewall problems are detected. I will take a stab at the UI in the upcoming spec.
Space has been provided for this messaging in the new wireframes: http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/SqueezeCenter_Control_Panel#Diagnostics_.28PC_only.29 Please use same copy as in troubleshooting app as deemed appropriate. Dan has agreed that it's fine for this to be a Windows-only feature...
