Description Dan Evans 2009-05-04 10:50:10 UTC
in testing r5588 this morning, I am unable to get my Fab4 to connect to WRT54G2 using WPS. I've tried the router's default WPS settings and also tried tweaking those settings to see if it was any given flavor.

* It would not connect at any time using the button-push method.

* It successfully connected using the PIN method.

If this bug is real it's an MP show-stopper.

Assigning to Ross per James.

(Blocker means that it prevents the engineering team from doing work, Critical is for showstopper features, in brief.)

Dan,

I took the same router from your desk and did a factory reset on it.

I then setup the router using WPA.

Testing with r5588 I was able to connect to the WRT54G2 using WPS both with the Button-push method and with the PIN method.

Come by when you get a chance and we will test further.

Works for me with 5588 with WRT310n and WNR3500 with one touch setup.

Per Sam: Netgear anticipates the user to setup the router before WPS will work. The user can either run through the wizard, or setup manually. The same should be true for other router manufacturers. With that said, even if the user doesn't setup the router or press the WPS button, we can still connect it's just a little confusing.

In the case where a user buys a WPS router, plugs it in and does absolutely nothing to setup (this means *NOT* pressing the WPS button on the router) Fab4 will still connect. Based on the wireless beacons Fab4 will know it is a WPS enabled router, and will display "Choose WPS Login Method" which lists the 3 options Push button, Pin method, and enter wireless password. In the case of a router that isn't setup at all, the user would select Enter Wireless Password, and then the first option is Open Network, and Fab4 connects perfectly.

If the user presses the WPS button on the router, this effectively sets up encryption, and then the user would need to use the WPS (Push Button) method, which also works. Pressing the WPS button for the first time on a factory reset router will change the SSID and enable encryption, doing this AFTER enabling Push Button setup on Fab4 will not work because the router is changing its SSID.
