Re: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=61763

My Fab4 was connected via wired ethernet, and this worked fine after the initial upgrade to r4875. However, some time later I did a factory reset and now it refuses to see the wired connection. The link lights on the switch port are turning slowly on and off, as if I was continually connecting and disconnecting the patch cable. This seems to be permanent as I've tried a number of factory resets since then. I have tried other patch cables and switch ports.

r4875 - original PB1 unit.

You are saying you tried other switch ports. I assume these are ports on the same switch.

Did you also try another switch (brand)? Did that change anything?
Comment 2 radish 2009-03-26 16:36:16 UTC
I've now tried with two other switches (different brands) and it's the same on all of them. I also just got the upgrade to r4974 and that hasn't fixed it either (including after another factory reset).

Any other tests I can do?

So as I noted in the forum this seems to have fixed itself after the player was powered off for ~24 hours. Note that the ethernet _didn't_ come back as a result of a fw upgrade. I'll leave it to you guys as to whether you keep the ticket open seeing as it may well not be "fixed".

What do you think, Richard, Caleb?

Radish: did you get an updated hardware unit to test with?

Not yet. I just got an email from Diane today about doing a swap, so I'll send this one back asap. It is working at the moment though and I haven't been able to reproduce the fault.

I'm now seeing the same thing with a PB1 at r5058. A wired connection that previously worked is now not working.

It's damned hard to tell, though, due to:

* removal of the wired/wireless connection choice

* poor diagnostics and strange ui flow when choosing a music source

1. I took my wireless connected Fab4, plugged an ethernet cable in and rebooted it. This is the same cable connected to the same switch port that had at one time worked. According to the new unseen connection logic, this is supposed to automatically connect using the wired ethernet connection.

But my wireless access point still showed a connection with the Fab4's MAC address. I had to pull the power to the damned WAP to know for sure how the Fab4 was or wasn't connected.

2. After pulling the plug on the WAP, SC still showed the Fab4 as connected (it always takes a while before players are removed). So I tried 'My Music' in the touch ui and it still displayed the local SC server, although not connected. Choosing that server I get a message that the server software needs to be upgraded. There's a big difference between can't connect and needs a software update, guys.

3. Pulled the ethernet cable. Fab4 locked up. Rebooted. Now there's no wireless network and Fab4 is sitting completely disconnected from any network.

Why isn't the bloody thing telling me that it has no network connection??? You know, like an SB1/2/3/Transporter/Boom would do?

Going into My Music it _still_ shows the local server (some things are best NOT remembered when the time comes) and then the 'need to upgrade' message if the server is selected.

*** Getting the ethernet port working again is only the first of your worries. You need to go back to the drawing board when it comes to connection logic and error messages.

I think Jim's comments are not related to the original bug. We have now removed auto selecting Ethernet during setup, and it is correct that the messaging is not good when not connected to a network. This will be fixed post MP.

Radish, have you seen this problem again?
Comment 9 Felix Mueller 2009-04-08 09:28:42 UTC
This is probably fixed with the latest firmware.

Please reopen if you run into this issue again. Thanks.

I haven't seen it again (but I've been away the last few days). I'll reopen if I see it again (BTW - Diane should have my original unit back by now in case it's a hardware specific issue).
