WOL should automatically retry connection from Squeezebox Boom if computer goes to Standby/Sleep
Last modified: 2010-05-07 10:20:02 UTC
Ticket #090308-000008 Enhancement Request: **From the customer*** The device, without any manual intervention, should send a WOL when it loses a connection. Furthermore, the device should automatically retry a WOL periodically until it re-establishes a connection without any manual intervention. The interval between automatic retries should be a configuration parameter that is specifiable by the user. **** Customer is aware of the way to initiate the WOL packet by either using the remote or buttons on the Squeezebox Boom manually, but feels this should be automatic. Thanks, LaRon
Customer is requesting a 'keep alive' plug-in for his iMAC. Felix, your thoughts on this issue?
Well, I think that is not what WOL is meant for and furthermore this would keep a computer up and running all the time. I am sure not everyone would be happy about this.
"Customer is requesting a 'keep alive' plug-in for his iMAC. Felix, your thoughts on this issue?" No, I did not. I requested that the Squeezebox Boom network software get fixed so as to recover automatically like many network products on the market today. Why does the user have to walk over and push buttons? Many network development folks use WOL packets for facilitating recovery. If the correspondent system is asleep and supports WOL, it will wake-up and receive subsequent retries of previous network transaction messages that had failed. If it doesn't wake-up or if the re-tries fail, at least you have fulfilled high availability responsibilities by trying. Suggestion: Put the connection and disconnection logic in callable member functions or subroutines. Then, they are invokable on power up, manual button-pushing, or automatic recovery. -Richard
User configurable per Squeezebox to keep also the current behavior. My SB ist power switched by my AV receiver and I do not want to activate the SC server when I watch TV with surround sound.
All new Squeezebox products are likely to be based on the SqueezePlay platform. We do not plan to implement any further enhancements to the ip3k firmware or which are targeted specifically at ip3k-based products.
