Bugzilla – Bug 11315
Need icons to indicate problem with WiFi connection, and server connection
Last modified: 2009-09-08 09:13:44 UTC
When Fab4 loses its connection to the WiFi its connected to, we should have an icon at the top somewhere to indicate the problem. We should also have icon appear if it loses its connection to the server. These are 2 very different failures, so need different icons or indicators. This will help Support quickly diagnose problems and help customers' issues.
We'll need a way to message this on the device. Note that even if the network goes down, the product can still play music and photos off the USB and SD storage devices. I wonder if we should put up a message only when the user actually tries to do something that requires a connection.

I would argue that this is a separate bug from what messaging we provide if a server or service is unavailable, as in bug 11314. This bug is more about an at-a-glance WiFi icon showing a connection issue. I'll be fine if we don't show that icon at all times-- instead only show it when it's lost connection to the WiFi. * IP3K players provide this feedback indirectly: by blanking their screens when no longer connected to a server or network. * Jive provides this feedback with an on-screen icon: RED if no longer connected to a network. * Fab4 provides no direct feedback. I want to remove as much guesswork as possible for any customer or support agent. If the device has lost connection to the WiFi network that is a significant enough problem to warrant displaying some feedback on the screen.
I think there's one bug: The user doesn't have good information about when their connection goes down. Maybe icons are a good solution, but I'll leave that to Weldon to come up with a specific design that solves the problem. Let's move the conversation to a single bug. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 11314 ***
