Bugzilla – Bug 11157
Teal in touch skin isn't working
Last modified: 2009-09-08 09:30:10 UTC
That teal flash of color is very jarring in our monochromatic UI. It needs to go. Let's try it with the same style of highlight overlay that is being used as the selection indicator in the remote skin. I'd even go so far as to say that the teal in the progress indicator and volume control and text entry is also out of place and distracting. Do you have the assets you need, ben? (Do think that there is room for color in our new UI, but the singular elements per screen are distracting, especially when they animate. To make them successful, we'd need to have that highlight color applied in other area, such as the scroll bar, buttons, etc. But I don't think this is the right solution either. Plus the the teal is really a nasty color.)
For the record, I totally disagree with this bug. Given the negative comments in the forum regarding teal accents, I expect I will lose this battle, but I quite like the idea of highlighting selected items with color on a monochromatic skin, and I don't really have anything against teal in moderation. The teal highlights on buttons, menu items, progress bars are all provided from assets, so this goes to Noah first.
We have a full color display which I think we should take more advantage of... Yest, the teal is a very polarizing color, however, we need at least 1 accent color. Where teal does work well is in smaller doses. We could go back to an 180 degree button press state with a soft teal glow around the edges? Please see attached for reference.

Just because our screen can make lots of colors, doesn't mean we have to use it that way. The problem now is that the teal, as rendered now, isn't an accent color, it's an alarming flash because it's the _only_ color that we have that's not a shade of grey and it sticks out especially when it pops on the screen for only a fraction of a second. If we had an accent color (teal or whatever) consistently visible every screen, then yes. If you really want to try it as an accent color, let's find a way to get it in the title bar, scroll bar and/or other widgets. That said, I think we were successful in dealing with this with Controller without an accent color and let combination of transparency, shades of grey and the wallpaper do the work for us.
Another observation, only applicable in the IR interface: The gradient used for the 'current item' is bright at the top and fades to black at the bottom, while the colored gradient is the opposite. This also contributes to the jarring effect as it gives the appearance of the background shifting vertically when a selection is made.
This is no longer an issue...
