Description Ben Calvin 2009-02-16 18:00:25 UTC
For some reason, squeezecenter and or squeezenetwork has stopped automatically updating duet controller, a lot of customers, that are on very old firmware and upgrade to 7.3.2, the initial connection crashes squeezecenter, with a windows error.

The problem is usually resolved by simply starting squeezecenter and updating the controller.

While this as being done, the duet controller is still on "connecting to squeezecenter"

Ben: What version of SC are the customers upgrading from when they see this error?

Have you had any new reports in the last week or so?
Comment 2 Ben Calvin 2009-02-23 14:56:20 UTC

Verified SB3 and SBC/SBR update to latest firmware after SC install

6.5.4 > 7.3.2 = OK
7.0.0 > 7.3.2 = OK
7.0.1 > 7.3.2 = OK
7.1.0 > 7.3.2 = OK
7.2.X > 7.3.2 = OK

Customer that had the problem last night:

new setup
r2448 to r3993
Windows XP SP2
Wireless linksys G router
Mcafee security center 8.0 virus scan 12.1
Comcast internet service
intel centrino laptop

"Squeezecenter has encountered a problem " windows error

Customer continued to have struggling wireless connection problems between connecting to the receiver and his controller.

One odd thing i did notice, the squeezeboxes that have this problem, have a defective color LED. Instead of a solid blue or solid green or yellow. It has "tints" of colors instead of changing.

For example a customer will tell me its a green-yellow= yellow, green-blue=green, white-blue= blue, white-purple = white

If you need additional information let me know
Comment 5 Ben Calvin 2009-02-24 19:16:44 UTC
mcafee program was crashing squeezecenter. Is there anyway we could get documentation to add squeezecenter as an exception, if there is way.
Comment 6 Ben Calvin 2009-03-01 14:02:06 UTC
More information on this problem.

Customer tried to connect to squeezecenter, crash

customer is running norton anti virus

Is there any reason why its crashing during connection and not when squeezecenter is attempting to start?
Comment 7 Ben Calvin 2009-03-16 14:41:47 UTC
Another crash

OS: Windows XP SP3
Anti-Virus: Avast anti virus 4.8 home edition
Squeezecenter: 7.3.2

customer advised Ambient weather by davis weather instruments program could cause a problem. Had a conflict with adobe reader before.

Ben: thank you for the reports, I'm testing each one as they come in. Keep up the good work
Comment 9 Ben Calvin 2009-03-31 11:27:02 UTC
provided reference number
receiver is yellow

factory reset receiver, power cycled controller, choose player, receiver, flashing white, controller unable to connect, power cycled controller, connected, squeezecenter crashed, update, update failed, update, success

OS: Windows XP SP2
Anti-Virus: Norton internet security 2006
Squeezecenter: 7.3.2 - 24695
PC type: Desktop
Wireless/Wired: Wireless

Forgot to get his pre-firmware. I wish there was some way of looking at what there backup firmware is on the controller since a firmware downgrade does accesses this.

New customer, first time connecting

OS: Windows XP SP3
Firmware: 7.3.2 r3993 / 58 , no upgrade needed
Squeezebox: Duet
Anti-Virus: Bit-Defender Total Security 2009
Squeezecenter: 7.3.2 - 24695

no other conflicts on computer.
Comment 11 Ben Calvin 2009-04-04 13:13:18 UTC
Same customer as above

OS: Windows Vista
Firmware: 7.3.2 r3993 / 58 , no upgrade needed
Squeezebox: Duet
Anti-Virus: Bit-Defender Total Security 2009
Squeezecenter: 7.3.2 - 24695

no other conflicts on computer.

It seems after even allowing through the messages and the proper ports are allowed, it's still crashing. Any relation to SQL being blocked by the many anti viruses listed here?
Comment 12 Ben Calvin 2009-04-05 09:27:58 UTC
existing customer

OS: Windows Vista Home premium 32-bit

This is a new one, but completely related. Another customer with the same problem, but on a mac!

OS: MAC OS 10.5.6
No anti-virus / no VPN

customer tried to connect wired and worked with no problems
customer disconnects ethernet cable, performs a factory reset on duet, receiver goes white, controller fails to connect, power cycled the controller multiple times, but when going to choose player, no player.

customer then checks the squeezecenter access, stuck and refuses to connect. restarts squeezecenter, choose player, receiver appears, connects with no problem
Comment 14 Ben Calvin 2009-04-18 12:14:49 UTC
OS: Windows XP SP3

Anti-Virus: Symantec corperate edition 10.1
Squeezebox type: Duet / Wireless setup
Squeezecenter: 7.3.2
Computer Wireless

No firmware update needed

customer was connected to squeezenetwork, switched, crash, restarted squeezecenter, connected
Comment 15 Ben Calvin 2009-05-12 18:26:17 UTC
Error from windows:
"Squeezecenter service has stopped working." Windows will close program and let you know when a solution is available.

Steps to get to get the message:
choose player was missing receiver, receiver light was off, returned receiver to a slow blinking red, player showed with last 6 digits of mac, chose that, update, continued, stuck at blinking white, squeezecenter crashed, started squeezecenter, update on receiver finished, controller stuck on updating squeezebox firmware.

OS: Vista 64-bit SP1
Firmware Upgrade: 7.01 r2448 -> 7.3 r3993
Anti-Virus: Use to have Trend Micro, uninstalled before call began
VPN: No VPN
Bit torrent: N/A

Windows XP SP3
Mozilla firefox
Norton Systemworks
no P2P software
Zone alarm
Squeezecenter 7.3.2
Comment 17 Ben Calvin 2009-07-27 10:46:00 UTC
it's still happening with new customers. Instead of a crash error squeezecenter freezes their PC. Sometimes they can go into task manager and end squeezecenter or they have to restart their PC

Ben: With 7.3.3 what customer may be seeing is a behavior of Scanner stalling out. When you have a customer with this this error, verify if Scanner.EXE is running and what % CPU load it has.

Vista users may need to enable 'show processes from all users' to see scanner.exe

Ben - this looks like a collection of various bugs. In order to make any sense out of it, we need

- verbatim error messages, plus where they come from (browser, player, Windows...)
- log files
- details whether "it crashing" refers to the player, squeezecenter, Windows, network connectivity etc.

Some of the issues due to McAfee and Symantec/Norton are known issues.
Comment 20 Ben Calvin 2009-07-29 10:48:08 UTC
There is no longer an error message.
The old message was from windows telling me Squeezecenter has crashed and will let the user know if there are any solutions.

what specific log files? windows? squeezecenter?
the freezing or crashing happens only with the duet

the fact that this happened on a mac with no anti virus makes me think it is something else.

I will check task manager when it happens again.

Adding time worked info
Comment 22 James Richardson 2009-09-14 09:23:17 UTC
7.4 will solve most of these issues.
