Description Weldon Matt 2009-02-06 13:13:45 UTC
In Accounts->RadioTime, the only fields are for account username and/or zip code. The copy states "To access local radio stations, enter either your RadioTime username or your zip code."

However, we now enable local radio via geolocation, so these settings are meaningless/incorrectly labeled.

HOWEVER, we DO use account username to enable RatioTime "presets" (i.e. you can log into RadioTime on the web and define presets, and then these will show up on your squeezebox in the "internet radio" menu under "RadioTime presets."

So... the presumed resolution to this is:

- remove the zip code field
- change the copy to "To access RadioTime presets on your Squeezebox, enter your RadioTime username below."

Michael: is this one yours to work on
Comment 2 Mark Miksis 2009-02-06 13:22:19 UTC
I thought RT used the zip code and/or account information for locals first and only used GeoIP if that was missing. If so, I'd suggest keeping it that way since GeoIP is not that accurate sometimes.
Comment 3 Michael Herger 2009-02-08 23:51:02 UTC
I'll second fletch's comment. IP based geo-location isn't always accurate. In this case the account can be very helpful.

What did we decide to do here?
Comment 5 Weldon Matt 2009-02-10 14:31:37 UTC
I need clarity on how this actually works. CC-ing Dean.
Comment 6 Mark Miksis 2009-02-10 14:41:40 UTC
Andy might be able to add some clarity to this also.

BTW, I agree that now that the fact that Internet Radio uses RT for many things is somewhat obscured, some of the settings text could be changed to become more clear. I'm just arguing against the idea of using GeoIP exclusively when a zip code is much more accurate.

How about when a person wants 'local' radio for a region they are not currently in?

That sounds like another good reason to not use GeoIP by default...
Comment 9 James Richardson 2009-02-10 15:10:47 UTC
IMHO

GEOIP by Default;
 unless user puts in ZIP they want 'local' content for;
  OR user account data

Change text to reflect this....

Perfect - and I think that's how it works now anyway. Just needs text to explain it. I guess this applies to both SC and SN.
Comment 11 Michael Herger 2009-02-11 01:24:58 UTC
change 5734 - remove ZIP code/region setting from RadioTime. We rely on the RadioTime user name or GeoIP (in this order).
