Forcing players to update firmware...
Last modified: 2009-09-08 09:24:22 UTC
SqueezeNetwork should support multiple firmware version. this happens to my Boom: ________ from http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?p=393203#post393203 ________ I have SqueezeCenter installed on my Synology DS207+ server. It works great on my Classic Squeeze, but on Boom something's wrong. On my SqueezeBoom this happens: When I go from SqueezeNetwork to SqueezeCenter its updating firmware. When I go back to SqueezeNetwork from SqueezeCenter it updates again (2/2) It does it all the time, which is sooo anoying - it starts all over again and again. I have turned the "looking for softwareupdates" off, in the settings-advanced-Softwareupdate in SqueezeCenter. It only happens on the SqueezeBoom device - as mentioned I have a Squeezebox 3 classic, that works fine. Im using SqueezeCenter version: 7.2.1 - 23630 (Synology software I think) ----------------------------------- reply 1: ----------------------------------- problem is that SqueeneNetwork is on a version equvavilent to 7.3.x something in SqueezeCenter. As you know player firmware is tied to SqueezeCenter version and Squeezenetwork is a kind of SqueezeCenter. So uppgrade SqueezeCenter on your NAS to 7.3.2 . Hmm make that a clean install of 7.3.2 uppgrade between major version don't work so good imho. And yes you are experiencing a drawback of using NAS, uppgrades is not easy and lags 6 months. Btw: My opinion is that SqueezeNetwork should support multiple versions of player firmware. I think you should file a bug on it and you get my vote for it :) forced uppgrades is a no no, evil bad mojo...
This is a design decision: new features sometimes require new firmware. This is the case with some functionality on SN. It features new, improved streaming code which is incompatible with the SC version you're running at home. Update your SC and the "issue" will be gone.
I place my vote for this to why can't SN run in different versions that supports different firmware (with different streaming etc ). I upgrade all the time it's fun :) but many are perfectly content with what they have if it works for them. They will of course not have the new functions and improvements then the answers is simple =upgrade . I see this as bad customer relations, this pops up all the time on the forum. As I sees it the badwill of forced upgrades is costing more than an effort to run SN in a mode that supports older firmware. The stragglers can be enticed to upgrade if every new version is significantly better and introduce new things that you really like.
