there's a bug in the networking code that does not allow selecting the wired interface. 

as of r3851 IMO /etc/network/interfaces is being written correctly when selecting eth0, but it does not connect and eventually times out.

fab4 will boot to a default dhcp eth0 correctly.

this works fine in setup now
