I can't use the Fab4 for its intended use, playing music (either itself or controlling another SD device) with the current UI.

It has to have a volume control. Without it, its not functional. Period.

All I'm trying to do is get volume controls high on the to-do list

I can assure you that a volume control will be in the touch UI.  Not a bug that needs to be tracked.
