24-bit ALAC files do not transcode for the stream.mp3 link. Short bursts of static only are played. I have attached a file as example.

Perhaps LAME cannot handle 24/96 or 24/48 files. Maybe AAC streaming support can be added and would allow for this transcoding? I am accessing my home machine from a second home.

Unfortunately this is a limitation of the tool we use for decoding alac and is covered in bug 6028.
