Summary says it all:  there should be a way to 'cancel' things.  for example, when connecting to a server, the user should be able to hit 'cancel' or 'back' or something to interrupt the current operation.

This is more complex than it appears, as some of these tasks cannot be easily cancelled. Marking for future right now, if anyone feels strongly about this please comment in the bug.

Where actions can be cancelled, they already are. Other places like network setup can't be cancelled (without significant amounts of work), so I'm marking this a won't fix for now.
