Bugzilla – Bug 10383
All players should set Firmware auto update option to ON
Last modified: 2009-06-17 09:36:03 UTC
There has been some discussion that ALL players should be set to AutoUpdate firmware. Leave the option to turn the feature on / off in the firmware menu for the power users that don't want to auto update. Currently Boom and SBR auto update, other players do not.
Consensus is to change the default, but leave the option.
Even though marked as enhancement, changing it now as it will take time until these firmwares will make it to the factory and thus be useful for new users. Changed default for firmware auto upgrade to on for SB3 and TR and leaving the option in 'Current settings' so power user can change it. Fixed in rev5355 - will be in SB3 fw 123 and TR fw 73.
This change did not make it into 7.3.2. Moved target to 7.3.3.
Upgrading SB2/3 & TP to r123 & r73 - then going to firmware menu > Current Setttings > Auto Upgrade = Off still Does the player need to be rebooted to change the setting to = On
I thought we want to allow for people to turn auto update off if they don't like it? I don't think people would like it if auto update is turned on every time they update. Auto update is only turned on automatically after a factory reset.

When a player gets updated _none_ of the firmware settings get modified, i.e. it keeps the wireless settings and info about SC etc. I guess we would get quite some support calls if we did in fact wipe firmware settings during an update. It is my understanding that this change to the auto update default is intended to improve the out of the box experience for new users - unfortunately this can only take effect when this or future firmware is used in the factory for production. This also means for testing purposes you would only see a difference after you do a factory reset. With older firmware the default is 'off', with this firmware it is 'on' after a factory reset.
Thanks for the explanation
