Bugzilla – Bug 10187
Scanner opens iTunes by default -- needs explanatory dialog
Last modified: 2011-11-06 23:23:41 UTC
Per the changes from bug 4180, SC now opens iTunes to access album artwork. We need some dialog box to communicate this to the customer-- something like, "SqueezeCenter will now open iTunes to access and import your album art." Currently it's very jarring and confusing having iTunes open spontaneously. (iTunes even reopens if you close it.)
Michael: would this be yours to add? Dan: can you provide some example text to Michael?
We need a plan here. Just "add some dialog" won't work. Please see with one of the GUI guys how this could work.
Just wanted to note that it is even more confusing when the user has not yet agreed to iTunes software license.
Michael's right: this would best be put to Brian or MattW.
Two considerations: (a) How is this supposed to work from a User Interface Guideline point of view ? Does Microsoft say anything ? SC is not the first program doing it, it happens with OLE, with AppleScript, Automator, etc. Re. iTunes in particular, most adds on out there do start it. My point is if nobody else is doing anything special about "unexpected iTunes launches", then the best may be to do the same. (b) If the object of the message is to tell the user SC started iTunes to get artwork, only the first time is useful. I mean popping up a dialog EVERY TIME you start iTunes is going to be dumb. And given the many windows on the typical desktop, it's going to be difficult to have the user first read the alert, then notice iTunes is running. I think a better way to fix the problem is (again) a preference (and/or actual question during set up) about launching iTunes to get artwork. This makes sure the user gets asked and informed *before* SC starts launching iTunes. The user may forget, but dismissing an alert about it every hour is going to be very annoying. Assuming the user can prevent the artwork scan to happen automatically, then we can also investigate a button "get iTunes artwork now" which does it manually. iTunes launches but under control of the user, so it's not unexpected. The music is kept in sync using the regular iTunes XML file scan.
I believe this is fixed now: michael?
I'm sorry, no. We haven't changed anything yet, awaiting a design/plan.
this is an administrative shuffle on priority fields to help make better judgment on the top end of the priority list. P4->P5, P3->P4, and P2->P3.
Matt Weldon doesn't work for us any more.
Unassigned bugs cannot have a priority.
