Description Tyler J 2008-11-29 18:48:32 UTC
Every track played will suddenly stop for several seconds at various points throughout the track. After 5-10 seconds with no audio output, the track will start from the beginning.

Using mp4 audio files, ripped with itunes.

Power-cycling the controller resolves the issue, for approximately 24-48 hours.

This is a correction of the description written above to try to more accurately describe what is happening. The music never stops at different points in the track. The problems are always at the start of the song. The song will start for a second or two and then seconds of silence and/or sometimes some static, then the track will play uninterrupted. When the next track starts the same thing happens track after track. It is maddening and ruins the whole listening experience. After enduring this for a week or so hoping it would fix itself I tried changing the wireless channel. This did nothing and it didn't really add up because it only happened at the beginning of the song. I had just bought the controller and upgraded my software to 7.2 a few weeks before this started happening. I then thought to turn the controller off and then on. I had not turned the controller off in the first two weeks of use (that's what holding in the home button does!). This cleared the problem up for about a week. I was starting to lose my artwork on the controller and this was fixed as well. The problem now comes back sometimes every day or every 2nd, 3rd or 5th day. So far shutting the controller of and immediately turning it back on gets the problem to go away until it pops up again. I may start shutting the controller off every night and turning it on every morning but I'd love to see a proper fix.

Notes from ticket
 - 3 SB's, 1 transporter, 1 controller
 - Controller firmware: r3191
 - apple lossless mp4 aac files

To help diagnose this problem I was curious if this only happens with certain file types.

apple lossless mp4 aac file is mentioned, but AAC, also known as Advanced Audio Coding, and Apple Lossless, also known as ALAC, are actually two completely different audio codecs even thought they may share the same extension. SqueezeCenter handles ALAC and AAC differently internally as well.

I suspect this issue lies with mov123 which is used when playing AAC files but not ALAC files.

You may wish to try using a nightly version of 7.3 that is in beta and see if it helps your situation. It can be found at http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Nightly_Builds

Steven,
Thanks for the reply, unfortunately I'm not a file expert (not even close) and don't really know what you're asking or talking about. I have an Imac computer and have set Slim to use Itunes. I ripped all of my cd's using my Apple computer to use apple lossless files. The files all have an mp4 at the end. I'm not sure if I've got the guts to try the nightly. Being a non-techie and a music lover puts you in a strange position with serving up your music. I've been using Slim for years now but I'm pretty paranoid about changing absolutely anything in my setup because I'm afraid the music will stop working! I was planning on probably trying the 7.3 when the official version came out but I'm not a beta type person.

The release version of 7.3 is out and available here http://www.slimdevices.com/su_downloads.html Please try it and let is know if it fixes this issue.

I installed 7.3 last night 12/16/08 and things have not gone well at all. I won't go into great details but I almost never seem to get a smooth upgrade. Customer service had me remove and reinstall twice. All of my artists were gone after being there for the first couple of hours. A complete clear and rescan today has seemed to fix this. I have had the same problem that this bug details happen a few times. It's only at the start of the song just like I described earlier. My system has been so buggy since last night that I would have to open several bugs just to try to describe all the crazy behavior.
I stopped using my controller since my last post and I still had the same problem intermittently when I was on 7.2. I'm not going to even try turning the controller on until everything else is working properly. I just had two rooms mysteriously stop playing only to play again a few minutes later. I've had to hit play to get the next song on my playlist to play several times. I hit look for new and changed music and It did a complete rescan etc. Every rescan seems to show different numbers of artists/albums etc. It's pretty amazing to think that years ago when I bought my Squeezebox two everything worked perfectly.
I was using the 6.5 versions in the same exact setup and did not have this problem ever with any of the versions. I bought the controller which caused me to upgrade to 7.1,2 and 3. My music is the only thing that gets me through the day and I haven't had much listening pleasure since the pre-controller/7.1,2,3 days.

To give you a little more specific detail of the problem, I played a few albums this morning. I was in the room with the transporter. At the start of several songs I would get an irritating pause and the Transporter would first say rebuffering.... and then waiting to sync......and then the song would play. Again in using all versions of 6.5 in the same system no problem. I'm at the point where my wife is insisting that all of this "junk" be thrown out.

What kind of imac is this? We have a theory that you are running low on CPU power.

I just checked my system monitor and it was showing the cpu at between 80-90% idle for a period of ten minutes. There's a lot more detail to the problems I'm having and I'm working on a detailed response to someone's questions in bug #259. I'm hoping to get a new post up over there by the end of the day.
