Now that there is more desktop specific behavior, it is getting harder to use desktop as a simulation for the controller. 

Proposal:  Add a command line param to indicate hw simulation. Then places where there is desktop specific behavior (such as default local player), allow for disabling those behaviors if the simulator arg is set.

Initially assigning to Richard for feedback.
