Description rov 2008-11-18 10:31:24 UTC
i've had loads of trouble entering (rather long) wireless keys into my 2 sb3s. it would seem like a great feature to be able to connect the device via ethernet and use the squeezecenter interface to cut & paste the wireless key, or at least use the keyboard for manual input, rather than entering via the remote control to the sb3 directly. then the device could be disconnected from ethernet and power cycled so it can discover the wireless network. with the wireless key already input to the device, the wireless connection would be much simpler.

i entered this on sb2/3 and pc-winxp platform, but i think it really applies to all devices and platforms.

thx,
rov

Felix: your thoughts on this one?

I'd love to be able to do this. Ideally, I think the way it would work is that only when a Squeezebox is connected via ethernet (I assume SC knows when this is the case) you'd have available a form in the player settings that would let you enter the wireless key. The form field should be plain text, not a password field that obfuscates the text being entered.

It might also make sense to allow the user to enter the network SSID, and perhaps the encryption type, then adjust the input field size and the error checking accordingly.

I don't have a Duet, but I wonder how far this might also go toward allowing a user to set up the Receiver for a wireless network without a need for the Controller.

I think the firmware required does exist. We're already using that code to configure a Receiver using the Controller. Once a SB is updated to the latest firmware you should be able to configure it using the Controller.

As Michael already said, latest firmware for all player SB3, TR, SBR and SBB support being setup via SBC.

But the whole point is to not use the controller or classic remote for setup, or at least for configuring the wireless key - it's cumbersome. That's why I suggested a temporary wired connection to make setup of the (permanent) wireless connection simpler.

Robin's plugin should do the job here, though it's not a standard feature of squeezecenter yet...

Felix: what do you think about including this as part of SC?

From what I read in the forums, people are having only limited success with that plugin.

The perl script does not look like it would be any easier. I think this would be a great enhancement.

This setting would fit nicely in SqueezeCenter under Settings -> Player. It would be very easy to hook it up via wired connection and then enter the password. In fact, that's how I setup the wireless connection for my laptops too. I connect with wired Ethernet, log into the router and then copy/paste the pass phrase into the wireless configuration.

There is very little support for WPS, especially in the huge installed base of wireless routers. Personally I feel adding this feature to SC 8.0 would be far more useful than WPS support.

All new Squeezebox products are likely to be based on the SqueezePlay platform.
We do not plan to implement any further enhancements to the ip3k firmware or
which are targeted specifically at ip3k-based products.
